Private Jet Charter Montenegro

Private jet charter in Montenegro centres on the Adriatic coast and one of Europe's most striking natural harbours, the Bay of Kotor. In recent years the bay has become a superyacht destination, with marinas such as Porto Montenegro in Tivat and Portonovi near Herceg Novi, alongside the historic towns of Kotor and Perast and the beaches of Budva and Sveti Stefan. Podgorica, the capital, sits inland. MEGA arranges private jet charter to, from and within Montenegro on aircraft operated by licensed partner operators, with planning that reflects the particular conditions of Montenegro's airports.

This page explains the airports used for private flights, the operating considerations at Tivat, and what we need to prepare a quotation.

Private jet charter Montenegro: why it makes sense

Montenegro is small, but its geography is steep: mountains rise directly from the coast and the bay. Scheduled connections are limited and seasonal, and many visitors otherwise route through other hubs. A private flight to Tivat can land passengers within minutes of Porto Montenegro, Kotor or Luštica Bay. For visitors staying further down the coast, Budva and Sveti Stefan are a short drive away.

Demand is mainly leisure: yachting, luxury resorts, villas and summer events, with a season running from late spring to early autumn. Business demand comes from real-estate and hospitality investment along the coast, government and diplomatic travel to Podgorica, and energy and infrastructure projects.

Airports in Montenegro

Montenegro has two international airports. Which one suits you depends on your destination, the aircraft, and conditions on the day.

Tivat Airport (LYTV / TIV)

Tivat Airport is beside the Bay of Kotor, close to Porto Montenegro and a short drive from Kotor, Budva and Herceg Novi. It is the preferred airport for most coastal visitors. Its location between the bay and steep mountains means the approach and departure procedures are demanding, and operating conditions — including hours, weather limits and any operator or crew requirements — must be confirmed for each aircraft and flight. During summer, parking can also be limited at peak times. We never assume Tivat is available for a particular aircraft until the operator confirms it.

Our Tivat flight guide and the London to Tivat and Tivat to London route pages provide more detail.

Podgorica Airport (LYPG / TGD)

Podgorica Airport, south of the capital, sits on a plain with fewer terrain constraints than Tivat. It serves government and business travel and is a practical alternative when Tivat is not suitable for the aircraft or the conditions. The drive from Podgorica to the coast takes around one to one and a half hours, depending on destination and traffic. See our Podgorica flight guide.

Dubrovnik as a cross-border option

Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia is close to Montenegro's western border and Herceg Novi. It is sometimes used as an alternative for the Bay of Kotor, with a road transfer and a border crossing between the two countries. Our Croatia private jet charter page explains Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian coast.

Operating considerations at Tivat

Tivat's setting is the reason visitors come — and the reason planning matters. The surrounding terrain affects approach paths, and weather such as low cloud, crosswinds or summer thunderstorms can influence whether a landing is possible at a given time. Operators assess each flight under their own procedures. When Tivat is not suitable, the options are usually Podgorica or Dubrovnik, with ground transport arranged to your destination. We discuss these alternatives openly before the trip is contracted, so there are no surprises on the day.

Typical charter uses in Montenegro

Superyachts and marinas

Porto Montenegro and Portonovi are home ports and stopovers for large yachts. Owners and guests often fly into Tivat to join a yacht and depart from another Adriatic or Mediterranean airport at the end of the cruise.

Luxury resorts and villas

The Luštica peninsula, Budva Riviera and Sveti Stefan host high-end hotels and residences. A charter allows families to travel directly and on their own schedule.

Combining Montenegro with the Adriatic

Montenegro fits naturally into an Adriatic itinerary with Dubrovnik, Split, the Italian coast or the Greek islands. See our multi-city private jet charter page and the Italy and Greece country pages.

Government and business in Podgorica

Delegations, investors and executives visiting the capital usually use Podgorica, which keeps travel times short for meetings in the city.

Choosing the right aircraft

Aircraft selection depends on passengers, luggage, distance and, above all at Tivat, the aircraft's suitability for the airport and its procedures. Light, midsize and some larger jets operate to Montenegro, but the operator confirms each case. Longer-range aircraft from the Gulf or North America may be better suited to Podgorica, depending on conditions. See our fleet overview; availability is confirmed for your dates.

Seasons and timing

The summer season, especially July and August, brings the most traffic to Tivat. Spring and autumn are quieter, with pleasant weather and easier parking. Winter is calmer on the coast, while the northern mountains around Kolašin and Žabljak attract skiers and hikers.

Border and customs

Montenegro is not a member of the EU or the Schengen Area, although it uses the euro. All international arrivals, including from neighbouring Croatia, pass through border and customs controls, arranged through the handling agent. Entry rules depend on nationality and should be checked before travel.

Ground transfers and onward travel

Tivat Airport is minutes from Porto Montenegro, and the old town of Kotor is a short drive around the bay. Budva and the Budva Riviera are around half an hour away, and Sveti Stefan a little further. Herceg Novi and Portonovi lie to the west, reached by road around the bay or by the short Kamenari–Lepetane ferry across the strait.

From Podgorica, the coast is reached through the mountains in about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the destination. Lake Skadar National Park lies between the capital and the coast and makes a scenic stop. In the north, the mountain resorts of Kolašin and Žabljak and the Durmitor National Park are reached by road from Podgorica.

We can coordinate chauffeured vehicles to meet the aircraft through the handling agent and share flight details with your yacht crew, marina or hotel. Private boat transfers across the bay are a pleasant alternative to the road in summer. If a flight needs to divert from Tivat to Podgorica or Dubrovnik because of weather or operating conditions, ground transport can be rearranged, and we discuss that contingency with you before departure so the plan is understood.

Spring and autumn are excellent times to visit the Bay of Kotor: the weather is mild, the marinas are calmer and parking at Tivat is easier to arrange. Many yacht owners also use the shoulder seasons for maintenance in Montenegro's marinas, which keeps owner and crew movements steady beyond the peak summer weeks.

How a Montenegro charter enquiry works

Tell us your departure city, final destination in Montenegro — your marina, hotel or villa — dates, times, passengers and luggage. We check aircraft options with partner operators, confirm whether Tivat is suitable or recommend an alternative, confirm handling and parking, and send a written quotation. After approval, the operator confirms the aircraft and crew and we coordinate ground transport. Flexible travellers can ask about empty-leg flights, which cannot be guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport is closest to Porto Montenegro?

Tivat Airport is a few minutes from Porto Montenegro. It is the usual arrival point for the Bay of Kotor when the aircraft and conditions are suitable.

Can every private jet land at Tivat?

No. Tivat's terrain and procedures mean suitability depends on the aircraft, the operator and conditions on the day. The operator confirms each flight; Podgorica or Dubrovnik are the usual alternatives.

How far is Podgorica from the coast?

Around one to one and a half hours by road to most coastal destinations, depending on where you are staying and traffic.

Is Montenegro in the EU or Schengen?

No. Montenegro uses the euro but is outside both the EU and Schengen. All international arrivals pass border and customs controls.

Can I fly into Dubrovnik and stay in Montenegro?

Yes. Dubrovnik is close to the Montenegrin border and Herceg Novi. A road transfer with a border crossing connects the two.

How early should I book a summer charter to Tivat?

For July and August, booking several weeks ahead helps secure aircraft and parking. Shorter-notice requests are still checked, subject to availability.
