Air Cargo Charter: Freighter and Urgent Cargo Flights
An air cargo charter puts an aircraft on your timetable instead of fitting your freight into someone else's. When a shipment is urgent, oversized, restricted or bound for a place scheduled freighters do not serve, chartering the aircraft is often the only reliable way to move it. MEGA Aviation arranges cargo charters through licensed partner carriers, from small time-critical consignments on a business jet to full freighter loads, and coordinates the paperwork that decides whether the cargo actually flies.
Air cargo charter: when it makes sense
Scheduled air freight works well for everyday shipments. A charter makes sense when one or more of these apply:
- Time — the cargo must move today or tomorrow, and scheduled capacity is full or too slow.
- Size or weight — pieces are too large or heavy for the holds of passenger aircraft or standard pallet positions.
- Restrictions — the commodity is classed as dangerous goods, or needs special handling that scheduled carriers will not accept.
- Destination — the airport is remote, lightly served or affected by disruption.
- Control — you need the cargo to stay together on one aircraft, with a known departure and arrival.
For particularly urgent consignments, see time-critical cargo charter.
What we need before we can price it
A good quote depends on good information. Before we approach operators, we ask for:
- Origin and destination, including the nearest airports if known.
- The date the cargo is ready and the latest acceptable arrival.
- Total weight and the number of pieces.
- Dimensions of the largest single piece, and whether the cargo is palletised, crated or loose.
- The commodity, and whether anything on the manifest is classed as dangerous goods.
- Any temperature, security or handling requirements.
Those details decide the aircraft type, the loading method and often the routing. If something is missing, we ask rather than guess, because a quote built on assumptions can fall apart when the cargo reaches the airport.
Aircraft options for cargo charter
The aircraft is chosen around the cargo, not the other way round:
- Business jets and turboprops suit small, very urgent consignments such as aircraft parts, documents and medical supplies.
- Passenger aircraft holds can carry palletised or loose cargo when the main deck is not needed.
- Narrowbody freighters carry substantial palletised loads on regional and medium-haul sectors.
- Widebody freighters carry large volumes, heavy pieces and outsize items over longer distances.
- Specialist heavy-lift aircraft are needed for exceptionally large or heavy cargo; availability is limited worldwide.
The operator confirms door dimensions, floor loading and weight limits against your cargo before the quote is final. For outsized items, see oversize and heavy cargo and our heavy-lift quote request.
Specialist cargo we arrange
Different cargo carries different rules, and each type has its own page with more detail:
- Dangerous goods air charter — classified, packed and declared under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
- AOG aircraft parts — engines, components and tooling for aircraft on ground.
- Pharmaceutical and cold-chain cargo — temperature-controlled shipments with monitoring.
- Humanitarian relief cargo — relief supplies for NGOs, agencies and governments.
- On-board courier — a courier travelling with small, urgent consignments.
- Oil, gas and energy cargo — equipment and spares for energy projects.
Customs, permits and handling
A cargo charter succeeds or fails on its paperwork. Landing and overflight permits, customs declarations, export and import licences, security screening and ground handling all have to be in place before the aircraft departs. The operator files its flight permissions; the shipper, consignee and their customs brokers remain responsible for the commercial documents. We coordinate the timing between them and flag anything that looks likely to delay the flight.
Lead times vary by country, commodity and airport. Some permits can be issued quickly; others take several working days. We tell you early which parts of the plan are confirmed and which are still pending.
Where we arrange cargo flights
Our cargo coordination works mainly from the Gulf, with routings across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and Central and South Asia, and long-haul flights beyond where the cargo and aircraft allow. Origin and destination options always depend on the airports, permits and aircraft available for the date. For shipments starting in the UAE, see our air cargo charter Dubai page.
How the process works
- Request — send the cargo details through the quote form.
- Assessment — we review the cargo and approach licensed carriers with suitable aircraft.
- Proposal — you receive a written quote naming the aircraft type, the carrier, the timing and what is included.
- Confirmation — once you approve, the operator finalises permits and slots and we coordinate handling and documents.
- Flight and delivery — we keep you updated through loading, departure and arrival.
Full charter, part charter and shared capacity
Not every urgent shipment needs a whole aircraft. A full charter gives you the entire aircraft and its schedule, which suits large volumes, sensitive cargo and tight deadlines. A part charter can work when another shipper's cargo is moving on the same route and the operator agrees to combine loads; it can reduce cost but adds dependency on the other shipment. For small consignments, an on-board courier or a business jet may be faster and simpler than a freighter. We explain which options are realistic for your cargo and dates, and what each one means for timing and risk.
Loading, packing and ground handling
How the cargo is packed affects which aircraft can take it. Freighter main decks are loaded through large side or nose doors using pallets and containers, while smaller aircraft and passenger holds have tighter door openings and lower floor limits. Pieces should be secured on pallets or in crates with clear weight markings, lifting points identified and any orientation requirements stated. Heavy or awkward pieces may need special loading equipment at both airports, and that equipment is not available everywhere. We check these points with the operator and handling agents before confirming the plan, because a load that cannot be lifted into the aircraft will not fly, however quickly it reached the airport.
Planning around time and cost
Charter cost is driven mostly by aircraft positioning, flight time and airport charges. An aircraft already near your origin can lower the price significantly, while a long positioning flight adds to it. Flexibility on dates, airports or aircraft type often opens more options. If cost matters as much as speed, tell us; we can compare a faster dedicated flight with slower but more economical alternatives in the same written proposal.
Tracking and communication during the flight
Once the cargo is booked, the questions change from whether it can fly to where it is now. We keep shippers and consignees updated at the points that matter: cargo accepted at the airport, loading complete, departure, any technical stop and arrival. If a delay occurs, such as a late permit, weather or a technical issue with the aircraft, we explain the cause and the options rather than leaving you to chase information. On arrival, the handling agent and the consignee's customs broker take over the clearance and onward delivery, and we stay in contact until the cargo has been released.
Air cargo charter FAQs
What is an air cargo charter?
An air cargo charter is a flight booked for your shipment alone or shared on agreed terms, rather than space bought on a scheduled service. The aircraft, routing and timing are planned around the cargo.
What information do you need to quote a cargo charter?
The origin and destination, the ready date, total weight, the dimensions of the largest piece, the number of pieces, whether it is palletised, the commodity and whether anything is classed as dangerous goods.
What types of aircraft are used for cargo charter?
Depending on size and weight, a shipment may travel on a business jet, a turboprop, the hold of a passenger aircraft or a dedicated narrowbody or widebody freighter. The operator confirms suitability before the quote is final.
Can you carry dangerous goods or oversize cargo?
Both can be arranged when the operator holds the right approvals and the aircraft can take the dimensions and weight. Dangerous goods must be classified, packed and declared under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
How much does an air cargo charter cost?
Price depends on the aircraft, distance, positioning, handling, permits and customs requirements, so each shipment is quoted individually. You receive a written quote before you confirm.
Who operates the cargo flight?
Every cargo flight MEGA Aviation arranges is operated by a licensed partner carrier that holds its own air operator certificate. MEGA coordinates the request and the logistics, and the quote names the operating carrier before you confirm.
