Helicopter charter Aqaba to Wadi Rum
About 25 nautical miles direct, roughly approx. 15–25 min in the air as a planning indication. By road the same journey is typically typically 1h to 1h 15m by road. Flights are performed by licensed third-party helicopter operators on request, never as a scheduled service.
The sector in practice
A short desert hop from the coast into the protected area, flown for camp transfers, filming and survey work. The road is not difficult, so the value is schedule rather than access — and the arrival itself, which is why film and production work uses it.
Wadi Rum is a protected area, so landing sites need both the site owner's consent and protected-area permission. Where either is missing the flight cannot be offered, and the transfer reverts to road.
Landing sites at each end
- Aqaba King Hussein International (OJAQ / AQJ) — Southern gateway with rotary connections
- Wadi Rum camp landing sites (Wadi Rum) — Desert sites requiring protected-area and owner consent
- Aqaba and Tala Bay resort helipads (Resort pads) — Hotel pads subject to owner permission
Operating window
Permits are approved by the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission; protected-area consent is required for landing sites.
Camp landing sites are privately controlled, with daytime access and their own surface and size limits.
Most VIP rotary work is planned in daylight; night flying depends on the operator's approval, the aircraft and lit landing sites at both ends.
Desert heat, dust and afternoon wind narrow the practical window, with morning flying preferred in summer.
Seasonal pattern
Spring and autumn are the peak visitor seasons and the most comfortable to fly. Summer heat reduces desert performance sharply, and winter brings wind, occasional rain and the clearest visibility.
Typical reasons for this flight
- Desert camp transfers on tight schedules
- Film, production and photography work, subject to permits
- Survey and inspection flights over the protected area
- Combining a Red Sea stay with a desert night
Frequently asked questions
Can a helicopter land at a Wadi Rum camp?
Only with the camp owner's consent, protected-area permission and a landing site that suits the aircraft. All three are confirmed before the flight is offered.
How long is the flight?
About 15 to 25 minutes depending on the camp, against roughly an hour by road.
