Air Ambulance Abu Dhabi — ICU Medevac Flights
Abu Dhabi · AUH / OMAA · AZI / OMAD
Abu Dhabi's tertiary hospitals draw patients from across the Gulf, the Levant and East Africa, and the emirate also sponsors treatment travel abroad. Both patterns land on the same operational desk: an ICU-configured aircraft, a physician and critical-care nurse, and a coordinator who owns the clinical chain end to end.
Al Bateen Executive Airport sits inside the city, which changes the arithmetic for time-critical cases. Where the receiving facility is on the island, the shorter road leg from Al Bateen frequently matters more than a marginally faster flight into Zayed International.
Airports used for Abu Dhabi medical flights
- AUH / OMAA — Zayed International: Full international handling and the usual arrival point for long-range inbound missions and onward connections.
- AZI / OMAD — Al Bateen Executive: Business-aviation-only field inside the city. Short ambulance transfers to the main hospital cluster and a quiet ramp for patient loading.
- AAN / OMAL — Al Ain: Used when the patient is in the eastern region, avoiding a long road transfer to the coast.
Medical cabin options
- Light medical jet — Al Ain, Dubai, Doha and Bahrain sectors with a single stretcher configuration.
- Midsize medical jet — Cairo, Amman, Karachi and Mumbai, with capacity for a second clinician and an accompanying relative.
- Large-cabin medical jet — European referrals where the medical team needs a full working area around the patient.
- Ultra-long-range medical — Nonstop intercontinental repatriation when an en-route stop would add clinical risk.
Medical corridors flown from Abu Dhabi
- Abu Dhabi ↔ London / Frankfurt / Munich — Sponsored and private treatment travel to European centres, and repatriation of European nationals after treatment in the emirate.
- Abu Dhabi ↔ Cairo / Amman / Beirut — Steady regional flow in both directions, often escorted transfers rather than full ICU.
- Abu Dhabi ↔ Delhi / Mumbai / Chennai — Repatriation of residents and workers, and cardiac and transplant referrals into Indian centres.
- Abu Dhabi ↔ Riyadh / Dammam / Doha — Short Gulf sectors flown regularly for specialist bed availability rather than distance.
- Abu Dhabi ↔ Nairobi / Khartoum region — East African repatriation where clearances and receiving-facility capability need careful verification before commitment.
Bed-to-bed ground transfers
- Ambulance-to-aircraft transfers at Al Bateen are planned with the handling agent so the vehicle reaches the aircraft side rather than a terminal kerb.
- For neonatal and paediatric cases, the transport incubator team travels with the aircraft and the receiving NICU is briefed before departure.
- Where a patient is under a sponsorship programme, we work alongside the sponsoring office so approvals and the flight plan advance together.
Documentation and clearances
- Fit-to-fly documentation, current imaging and a clinical summary are assembled for both the flight physician and the receiving facility.
- Visa and entry status for the patient and escort is confirmed early — for onward European legs this is often the longest-lead item.
- Medication and controlled-drug manifests are prepared for every country on the routing, not only the destination.
Costs
Medical flights are quoted per case. Distance, aircraft category, medical crew and equipment, permits, positioning and the dates all move the figure, so a published rate would not be accurate. You receive a written quotation with the configuration set out before anything is committed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Al Bateen better than Zayed International for a medical flight?
It depends on the case. Al Bateen is inside the city with a short ambulance run to the main hospitals and a quiet ramp, which usually suits time-critical transfers. Zayed International suits long-range aircraft and missions needing full international handling. Your coordinator will recommend one on the specifics.
Do you carry out neonatal transfers to or from Abu Dhabi?
Yes, with a transport incubator and a dedicated neonatal team. Neonatal cases are assessed individually and the receiving NICU must confirm acceptance before the aircraft is committed.
Can you coordinate with a government sponsorship office?
Regularly. We work with the sponsoring office on approvals while aircraft, permits and receiving-hospital acceptance progress in parallel, so nothing waits in sequence unnecessarily.
Who is on board the aircraft?
A board-certified flight physician and a critical-care flight nurse as standard, with specialist team members — neonatal, ECMO, perfusion — added where the case requires them.
Can you repatriate a patient from Abu Dhabi to India or Pakistan?
Yes. These are frequently flown corridors for us, and they are usually stretcher transfers of stable patients returning home after treatment. Receiving-hospital acceptance and escort documentation are arranged before departure.
How is the transfer coordinated at the destination?
Bed-to-bed. The receiving ambulance meets the aircraft, and the flight physician gives a direct clinical handover to the admitting team, with records transferred at the same time.
Missions are flown by registered third-party operators with medically configured aircraft. Clinical acceptance by the receiving facility, crew and equipment suitability, permits and weather all govern departure.
