Horse & Equine Air Transport Charter
A horse travelling to a race meeting, a show or a breeding season flies as the principal, not as freight. Jet stalls, an attending groom, a planned ramp and arrival, and the health certification sequenced so the horse arrives fit to run. We coordinate the whole movement with the specialist carriers who operate it.
Movements performed by specialist equine carriers under IATA Live Animals Regulations. Jet stalls, attending grooms and veterinary escorts planned per horse. Health certification and quarantine sequenced with the receiving authority.

Racing, sport and breeding, by air
International horse racing runs on aircraft. The major Gulf meetings draw runners from Europe and further afield; the European season draws Gulf-owned stock north every spring; sales and covering seasons move breeding stock in both directions. A racehorse is an athlete on a programme, and a flight has to slot into that programme without breaking it. The carriers who specialise in equine transport load horses every week and fly with professional grooms; our job is to assemble the movement — aircraft, stalls, paperwork, quarantine, the ramp at both ends — so the programme holds.
We coordinate rather than operate: the flight is performed by the specialist carrier, the stalls and attendants are confirmed per horse, and the health file is built with the attending vet and the receiving authority. Where an owner, trainer or racing team needs to be on the same schedule, a passenger charter is timed alongside the horse movement.
Movements we coordinate
- Gulf to Europe for the racing season — the annual movement of Gulf-owned stock to Britain, Ireland and France, and back.
- Europe and the US to the Gulf race meetings — international runners arriving for the major meetings, with return legs after the race.
- Gulf to the United States — long-haul movements for racing, sales and breeding through the specialist equine gateways.
- Showjumping and equestrian circuits — several horses, grooms, tack and equipment on the same movement.
- Breeding stock and sales — mares, stallions and young stock moving for covering seasons, sales and purchases.
- Endurance and regional movements — shorter sectors within the Gulf and the wider region.
Aircraft, stalls and the people around the horse
- Specialist equine freighters — main-deck freighters fitted with jet stalls, flown by carriers whose crews load horses every week.
- Chartered freighter for a single party — a dedicated charter where a yard moves a string together or timing cannot share a schedule.
- Combination with passenger charter — owners, trainers and staff on a passenger jet timed to the horse movement.
- Jet stalls and equipment — typically two or three horses per stall, with an attending groom and, where needed, a veterinary escort.
Health papers, quarantine and arrival
Every international horse movement runs on a file: identification, vaccination records, health certificates issued within defined windows, and blood tests where the destination requires them. Some corridors require pre-export isolation, post-arrival quarantine, or both — the booking of quarantine space is often the real deadline. We sequence the quarantine windows, the veterinary visits and the flight as one plan, and confirm the current requirement with the receiving authority for each movement.
Horses load up a wide, shallow ramp, usually walked on by their own groom, with departure shortly after. On arrival the ramp, transfer vehicle and stabling are confirmed before the aircraft lands.
Horse air transport — FAQs
How do horses travel on an aircraft?
In purpose-built jet stalls on a freighter main deck, typically two or three horses per stall, with an attending groom and, where needed, a veterinary escort.
Who operates the flight?
Specialist carriers working to IATA Live Animals Regulations. MEGA arranges and coordinates the movement; the operating carrier is named in your quotation, and any credentials belong to that carrier.
What health paperwork does my horse need?
Identification and vaccination records, health certificates within defined windows, blood tests where required, and quarantine arrangements where the corridor demands it — confirmed with the receiving authority for each movement.
Can my own groom travel with the horse?
Yes — a yard's own grooms regularly fly on the movement, alongside or instead of the carrier's professional flying grooms.
Can you move a whole string to a race meeting?
Yes — a dedicated freighter charter or a shared scheduled equine service, with stalls, grooms, tack and equipment on the same movement.
How early should an international horse movement be planned?
As early as the programme allows. Quarantine space and health-certificate windows are usually the binding constraint rather than the aircraft.
What does horse air transport cost?
There is no published figure. Price depends on the number of horses, the route, shared service or dedicated charter, stalls, attendants, quarantine and ground at both ends. Every movement is quoted individually.
Can you fly us on the same schedule?
Yes — owners, trainers and staff commonly travel on a passenger jet timed to the horse movement, coordinated by one controller.
